brainwave training head Overview of EEG Biofeedback

EEG Biofeedback, or Neurofeedback, is a technique in which we train the brain to help improve its ability to regulate all bodily functions and to take care of itself. When the brain is not functioning well, evidence of this often shows up in the EEG (Electroencephalogram). By challenging the brain, much as you challenge your body in physical exercise, we can help your brain learn to function better.

Frank Duffy, MD Associate Editor Neurology and Clinical EEG: "The literature, which lacks any negative study of substance, suggests that EBT (EEG Biofeedback Therapy) should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas. In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally accepted and widely used."

Daniel Amen M.D. Change Your Brain Change Your Life: "I've discussed ADD as primarily a problem in the prefrontal cortex. Medication is the cornerstone of the "biological" treatments for ADD, but it is not the only biological treatment. Over the past fifteen years, researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of a powerful adjunctive tool in the treatment of ADD and other prefrontal cortex problems: brain-wave or EEG biofeedback....In my experience with EEG biofeedback and ADD, many people are able to improve their reading skills and decrease their need for medication. Also, EEG biofeedback has helped to decrease impulsivity and aggressiveness. It is a powerful tool, in part because the patient becomes part of the treatment process by taking more control over his own physiological process." pgs. 143-144.

William Sears, M.D. The A.D.D. Book: "Among the newer approaches to managing ADD, the most exciting is a learning process called neurofeedback. It empowers a person to shift the way he pays attention. After more than twenty-five years of research in university labs, neurofeedback has become more widely available. This is a pleasing development, because neurofeedback has no negative side effects." pg 205.

During a training session, small sensors that act like tiny microphones are placed on the scalp and ears, and "listen" to the electrical activity. These signal are transmitted to a computer, via an amplifier, whereby this signal (EEG) is filtered (much like light is filtered through a prism), into frequency bands.

The basic brainwave frequencies which are trainable with current technology are:

Beta Waves  12HZ to 41HZ

Alpha Waves  7HZ to 12HZ

Theta Waves  3HZ to 7HZ

Delta Waves  .5HZ to 3HZ

Through Neurofeedback training, a person can obtain information about their overall brain functioning and learn to make changed through strengthening or relaxing brainwaves, which may be stuck in over or under arousal. These changes can be significant, not only addressing stubborn clinical concerns, but also assist in tuning up the entire mind body connections.

When training an individual is sitting in a comfortable chair, and is usually in a darkened room in front of a computer screen. Often the environment is enhanced by positive music. Then the person simply sits quietly and lets their brain and body learn from the bio-feedback. The feedback is in the form of sound, music, and visuals, such as animated designs, movies, and simple games.

The child with Attention Deficit Disorder can learn to play a Pacman game using only their brainwave activity (no mouse or joystick), getting rewarded as their attention improves. Through Neurofeedback, or EEG Biofeedback brainwave training, clients learn to recognize when they are wandering, sleeping, or not in "the zone". Neurofeedback takes these practices out of the subjective realm, and can make a difference between maintenance and mastery.

Overall,  training through Neurofeedback frees up blocked energy. This energy may be stuck attending to the past, or stuck attending to any of life’s many distractions. Once we free up this energy, it becomes available in the here and now and allows us to be more attentive to the present moment. So when it is time to sleep, we attend to sleeping, when it is time to study, work, play, etc. we are there. If we should meet the Buddha in the store, we won’t mistake him or her for the grocery clerk because our mind was wandering.

While Neurofeedback often targets specific illnesses and symptoms, such as ADD, headaches, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), LD, addictions, anxiety and panic disorders, depression, sleep disorders ( to name a few)-it is also providing feedback about many mind body connections simultaneously. Insights during EEG Biofeedback or Neurofeedback brainwave training range from the subtle to the profound. These insights are often the key in unlocking  valuable stores of energy. The resolution of some past experience will free up energy culminating in revving up the body mind connections. This amplification is in personal energy, in the form of our life force. This enhanced vitality makes it more likely that a person will be able to do things necessary to continue more effectively and efficiently on their healing journey.
