Aloha from James and Julieah,
We moved to Kauai January 2003, from the Mid-West, and have set up our
business
in the countryside of Omao.

We have been using Neurofeedback/EEG Biofeedback, clinically, since 1994,
and have worked with a wide range of health and growth issues.
We first began in a clinic setting working with individuals, with
chronic
and often time’s critical illnesses, on their stress
related issues. Over the past ten years we have broadened our work to
include a wide range of clinical health issues as well as personal growth
areas such as Peak Performance Training and Meditation.
Our training has spanned three decades. While living in Berkley,
during the early 70's, with Harish Johari, a Tantric Yogi from India, we
would sometimes hook up to biofeedback equipment. It was interesting
witnessing the difference between we "Westerners", as we self
consciously tried to create alpha waves, in comparison to Harish, and even
his very young children. Even his three year old daughter, sitting in her
"Full Lotus" position, could successfully change brainwave states
within a few minutes. Harish himself could be in state by the time the
biofeedback equipment was turned on.
In the mid-70's, while attending school at Sonoma State University, in
Northern California, I studied biofeedback under Eleanor Criswell,
who is highly regarded in the field today. Our training consisted of
GSR (skin moisture) and temperature training only, but had a very profound
effect on me.
In 1994, a Psychologist friend, Dr. James Ulness, allowed me to use a
Brain Tracer EEG Biofeedback system in our counseling center. The Brain
Trainer is a two channel EEG trainer, and the predecessor to the ProComp we
now use. A couple years latter, while living in Seaside, Oregon, I
became aware of the work and training being done at EEG Spectrum in
California. The training at EEG
Spectrum, under Susan and Sigfried Othmer, Barry Sterman and William
Scott provides the protocol strength we use in our practice. We have also studied under Valdean Brown, Joel Lubar, and
Lester Lefeme.
We have degrees in Psychology, with graduate work in Neurology and
Neuropathology, as well as a strong Holistic, Complementary Health
background. Our first Holistic Clinic, Health Options, was started in 1983
in Fargo, North Dakota. At that time we were doing Wellness Counseling and
Massage Therapy. When we began our clinic, there were only two Massage
Therapists in the surrounding region. There are now over 50 advertising
there locally and 2 massage schools. WE ARE USED TO PIONEERING! We have also
run the largest Natural Health consumer Exposition in the US, Health Options
Expo. We produced our "show" in Miami, Minneapolis, and Denver
over a period of Eight years. It was following this experience that we began
our Neurofeedback work.
While EEG Biofeedback or Neurofeedback is still gaining credibility in the
eyes of the medical community, there are many aspects of its use, which have
been granted mainstream acceptance. These areas fall mainly in the realm of
Biofeedback. Insurance companies, including Blue Cross, reimburse for
conditions such as headaches, neuromuscular pain, intestinal disorders, TMJ
and incontinence. While it is more difficult, they will sometimes reimburse
for central nervous system disorders, including ADD/ADHD. Julieah and I work
with these conditions, employing both traditional Biofeedback modalities, as
well as EEG Biofeedback. Our equipment is state-of-the-art, and is capable
of combining a variety of instruments simultaneously to maximize time and
results, including EMG, Temperature, Respiration, Heart Rate/Pulse, and EEG.
While EEG Biofeedback is still relatively unknown, it is rapidly gathering
recognition and support. Early successes with seizure disorders, and a
unique spin-off leading to its effective ability to assist with attention
disorders has fostered keen interest in clinical, as well as educational
situations, including a large number of schools that use EEG Biofeedback to
help kids with ADD/ADHD.
In our training, Julieah and I have worked with numerous children, as well
as adults, with ADD/ADHD. Our experience has been, like many in our field,
extremely successful and rewarding. In contrast, I was a school counselor at
a fourth to eighth grade Native American therapeutic boarding school, in
which the percentage of attention difficulties was very high, and
experienced mainly exasperation with standard approaches.
While much of Julieah and my work is clinical, we also use our experience
and equipment to help people move ahead in their striving for personal
achievement. Biofeedback initially gained recognition for its ability to
help people achieve greater control over their Alpha brain wave frequencies.
This, in turn, allowed them to achieve control over previously thought of
uncontrollable physical states such blood pressure, and oxygen flow. Much of
this earlier Alpha Training was initiated by an interest in the mind/body
control of eastern mediators, and Yogis.
Having studied meditation for a number of years, we are very comfortable,
and flexible in these types of trainings. While we appreciate the clinical
usefulness of Neurofeedback, our own experience in the ability to use these
tools for deepening and expanding conscious awareness, and creativity,
endures us to this aspect of our work. One of the reasons we feel we have
been led to Kauai, is because of its uniquely creative and introspective
population. With our other hats on, Julieah and I are musician. We have a
small personal recording studio, have a couple CD’s, and work
energetically with our music and sound to both grow and heal. We both
continue to train to assist ourselves in achieving the states of attention
which allow us to most appreciatively experience our own creativeness, as
well as furthering our quest for greater overall states of physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual health.
